The public transportation in Leyte is even more creative than the Jeepney of Manila. Commonly referred to as a Public Car they are modified Mitsubishi pickup trucks with an extended roof and benches to seat 17 snugly. It is your alternative definition for the Filipino word “balíkatan.” It’s not just an annual military exercise, but the main mode of transportation. Sardines, and Rush-Hour commuters on Chicago’s “L” would feel at home.
This is the essence of sustainability. Public transportation, and two legged mojo we call walking. The latter is the fantastic mode of transportation which served the Inca’s so well in their heady days of Empire!
It worked for them. It works for me. Gotta go. I see my car coming down the street now.
