Local Initiative Aims to Protect Filipino Fisherfolk in West Philippine Sea with Stealth Runner Patrol Boats
Baybay City, Philippines – A new initiative is underway to address the challenges faced by Filipino Fisherfolk in the West Philippine Sea due to ongoing territorial disputes. The “Stealth Runner Project” proposes the construction of a fleet of specialized patrol boats designed to protect Filipino fishers and their livelihoods.
The Stealth Runner boats will be designed with a low radar profile, allowing them to operate discreetly and deter illegal activities without resorting to violence. These boats will be crewed by trained Filipino fisherfolk and equipped to gather evidence of illegal actions by foreign vessels.
“The Filipino Fisherfolk are the backbone of our coastal communities,” said the founder of the project, Cliff Potts. “The ongoing disputes in the West Philippine Sea have significantly impacted their ability to earn a living. The Stealth Runner Project aims to provide them with a non-violent solution to protect themselves and their resources.”
The project highlights several key benefits:
- Enhanced Security: Stealth Runners will create a safer environment for Filipino fishers to operate by deterring illegal activities.
- Evidence Gathering: The boats will be equipped to collect evidence of illegal actions, which can be used for legal pursuits.
- Improved Monitoring: Increased presence of Stealth Runners will enhance monitoring and surveillance capabilities in the West Philippine Sea.
- Non-Violent Approach: The project emphasizes a peaceful approach to protecting Filipino Fisherfolks’ rights and maintaining regional stability.
The Stealth Runner Project proposal calls for the acquisition of boat designs from a renowned naval architect firm, Glen L, with customization to meet the specific needs of the West Philippine Sea. The project will prioritize the use of locally-sourced materials and will involve training Filipino fisherfolk in operating the Stealth Runners.
Funding for the project will be secured through donations. The estimated cost per vessel is $42,000 USD.
The project organizers are urging the community and all stakeholders to support the Stealth Runner Project.
