Beyond Fluffy Companions: Unique Creatures in Filipino Homes

Filipinos are known for their love of animals, and while cats and dogs are common companions, many unique creatures share Filipino households. These fascinating residents add a touch of the extraordinary to everyday life.
Geckos: House geckos, particularly the tokay (Gekko gecko), are frequent guests in Filipino homes. Often seen perched on walls or ceilings, these beneficial insectivores are revered for their pest-control abilities. Their loud chirps are even believed to bring good luck.
Tarsiers: In some parts of the Philippines, particularly Bohol, the Philippine tarsier (Tarsius syrichta) is a cherished sight. These tiny primates, with their enormous eyes and mesmerizing leaps, are considered lucky charms. Nonetheless, due to their conservation status, it’s illegal to keep them as pets. Responsible tourism allows for respectful observation of these fascinating creatures in sanctuaries.
Insects: For some Filipinos, especially in rural areas, insects are more than just creepy crawlies. Crickets (tuktuk) are a popular snack, deep-fried and seasoned for a salty, protein-rich treat. Some cicada species (hala) are likewise enjoyed for their crispiness.  Ants (特别是红蚂蚁) (especially red ants) are a delicacy in certain regions, particularly when cooked with coconut milk into a dish called “ant salad” (ensalada ng langgam).
Honey Badgers: While not exactly household pets, the honey badger (Melogale everetti) is a fascinating inhabitant of some Filipino islands. Known locally as the badger cat (paskol), these fearless animals are sometimes kept as mousers due to their relentless hunting skills. Still, their wild nature makes them unlikely companions for most.
Snakes: In some parts of the Philippines, particularly Mindanao, the Philippine pit viper (Trimeresurus flavoviridis) is seen as a household guardian. Traditionally revered for their pest control abilities, these venomous snakes are respected but not typically handled.
