Baybay City, Philippines – November 13, 2024 – Since Elon Musk’s much-publicized takeover in late 2023, X, the social media giant formerly known as Twitter, has been a platform in flux. While Musk promised a return to “free speech” and a more open platform, recent months have seen a concerning trend: a potential exodus of users.

Data from social media analytics firm Brandwatch paints a concerning picture. Their reports show a steady decline in user engagement on X since the beginning of 2024. Metrics like daily active users and average time spent on the platform are down by double digits compared to the pre-Musk era.

“There’s definitely a shift happening,” says Sarah Jones, a social media researcher at Brandwatch. “Our data suggests that many users are spending less time on X, and some are even abandoning the platform altogether.”

This decline appears to be fueled by several factors. First, Musk’s implementation of various changes, particularly the controversial overhaul of the verification system and a more hands-off approach to content moderation, has alienated a significant portion of the user base. Many users, particularly those who relied on X for news and information, feel the platform has become less reliable and more susceptible to misinformation.

“The constant barrage of negativity and misinformation is just overwhelming,” says Maria Garcia, a former X user who recently switched to Threads, a competitor platform. “I used to enjoy following journalists and experts for updates, but now it’s just trolls and conspiracy theories.”

Second, the rise of alternative social media platforms is offering users a chance to migrate away from X. Platforms like Threads, which emphasizes privacy and user control, and Bluesky, a decentralized social network built on blockchain technology, are attracting users disillusioned with the current state of X.

Thirdly, reports of increased toxicity and hateful content on the platform are driving users away. While Musk has claimed that free speech shouldn’t be stifled, many users feel the platform has become a breeding ground for harassment and abuse.

“It used to be a place for interesting discussions and connecting with people,” says David Lee, another former user. “Now it’s just constant arguments and negativity. It’s just not worth the stress anymore.”

However, it’s important to note that the picture isn’t entirely bleak for X. The platform still boasts a massive user base, and some users have embraced the changes implemented by Musk. There’s also a possibility that the decline in user engagement could be temporary, a readjustment period as users adapt to the new X.

“It’s still too early to say definitively whether X is losing its dominance in the social media landscape,” says Daniel Kim, a tech analyst. “The platform still has a loyal user base, and Musk is a very unpredictable figure. He could still pull off a turnaround.”

The coming months will be crucial for X. Whether the platform can regain its footing and stem the user exodus will depend on its ability to address user concerns, find a balance between free speech and content moderation, and compete effectively with the growing number of alternative platforms. Only time will tell if the Musk era will mark the beginning of the end for X, or simply a turbulent chapter in its ongoing story.
