The term “jobless recovery” describes a situation where the economy shows signs of recovery from a recession, yet the unemployment rate remains stubbornly high. This phenomenon was particularly notable in the early 2000s, following the 2001 recession in the United States, marking a time when many skilled workers found themselves underemployed despite a recovering economy.

Reflections on that era reveal a troubling pattern for older tech workers, who were vital in creating the industry’s infrastructure, yet faced neglect and discrimination during economic shifts in the 2000s and 2010s. Many seasoned professionals found themselves sidelined, as rising companies sought out younger talent for their perceived agility and fresh perspectives.

In a stark twist of fate, these experienced workers, who were eager to upgrade their skills to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving landscape dominated by advancements in artificial intelligence and automation, faced not only dismissal but also bullying from academic circles. Individuals who had spent their entire careers in scholastic environments often belittled the real-world experience and skill of these seasoned professionals, perpetuating a culture of exclusion rather than support.

As we stand at another crossroads in the tech industry, echoes of the past are becoming alarmingly familiar. The experiences of older tech workers between 2000 to 2011, marked by layoffs and a disregard for their contributions, serve as a warning. If the industry’s leaders do not actively foster inclusive environments that value the insights and skills across generations, we risk repeating the mistakes of yesteryear.

As the tech landscape continues to evolve, recognizing and honoring the contributions of all workers is more critical than ever. Understanding the importance of collaboration and valuing a diverse range of experiences can lead to growth and innovation that benefits the entire industry.

However, while Elon Musk seems to relish his close ties with President Donald J. Trump, it’s worth questioning whether this Team Rocket will genuinely pursue any meaningful diversification efforts — it seems he’s more interested in relying on H-1B Visa wage slaves.
