A Return to Puritan Ethics: A Prediction for the Next 20 Years
The world is in a state of flux, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that the cultural shifts of the past few decades are reaching a tipping point. One trend I anticipate will dominate the next 20 years is a resurgence of Puritan ethics.
What are Puritan ethics?
Puritan ethics were a set of moral principles that guided the lives of early American settlers. These principles emphasized hard work, frugality, self-discipline, and a strong sense of duty. They also promoted a strict adherence to religious beliefs and a rejection of worldly pleasures.
Why are Puritan ethics likely to make a comeback?
The primary reason for this resurgence is a backlash against the pervasive sexualization of mass media and the decline of social standards that began in the 1960s and 70s. This trend has been exacerbated by the #MeToo movement and the rise of #CancelCulture.
Women, in particular, have been encouraged to play the victim, often without taking responsibility for their own actions. This has led to a culture in which people feel entitled to protection from any harm, regardless of their own behavior.
While there is undoubtedly some truth to the idea that no one deserves to be a victim, it is also important to recognize that people should be aware of their surroundings and take steps to protect themselves. This is the essence of situational awareness, a concept that was central to the black community’s fight against racism.
The future of Puritan ethics
As the negative consequences of the current cultural climate become more apparent, I believe that society will begin to embrace a more traditional set of values. Puritan ethics, with their emphasis on personal responsibility, hard work, and self-discipline, are likely to play a significant role in this shift.
While it is impossible to predict the exact shape that this cultural change will take, it is clear that the pendulum is swinging back towards a more conservative worldview. The next 20 years may be marked by a return to the values that have shaped American society for centuries.
