Multiple Volcanoes Erupt in the Philippines as Earthquakes Shake the Region
April 14, 2025
Recent seismic activity around Philippine volcanoes raises alarms and concerns among residents and authorities. Reports indicate that both Kanlaon and Taal volcanoes are exhibiting significant signs of unrest.
Kanlaon Volcano, located on Negros Island, has been particularly active. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded at least 33 volcanic quakes within a 24-hour period. These earthquakes began early on April 14. Residents in nearby towns, including La Carlota City and Bago City, should remain on alert. Authorities expect ashfall from the volcano in these areas.
The volcano has also emitted a substantial amount of sulfur dioxide. Levels reached 1,931 tons. This has caused a plume of ash to rise over 800 meters into the air. Phivolcs raised the alert level to 3, indicating intensified magmatic unrest. This means residents should prepare for potential eruptions.
The situation remains fluid, and locals are advised to monitor updates closely. Emergency workers are on alert. They stand ready to respond if the situation worsens. Communities are already feeling the impact, with some residents experiencing effects from ashfall in the immediate vicinity.
Taal Volcano in Batangas province is also stirring concerns. It logged 55 earthquakes and 19 volcanic tremors over a five-day observation period. The activity is notably high for a volcano that is currently at alert level 1.
During the latest monitoring, Taal recorded 10 earthquakes within a single day. Each quake was accompanied by volcanic tremors lasting from one to two minutes. Sulfur dioxide emissions have hit 1,074 metric tons. Plumes have been observed rising to 400 meters.
While the alert level remains low, authorities stress the need for vigilance. Minor eruptions could still occur despite Taal’s status. PHIVOLCS warned of steam-driven eruptions and minor ashfall that can affect the surrounding areas.
In other news, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed plans to seek an extension of a ceasefire in Myanmar. This comes after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake devastated parts of the country. Malaysia aims to maintain humanitarian assistance amidst ongoing civil conflict. Anwar will meet with Myanmar’s junta leader on April 17 to discuss this. His efforts reflect a commitment to aiding regions affected by natural disasters.
Moreover, misinformation about earthquakes and volcanic activity has surfaced in social media. Reports of “doomsday fish” sightings in the Philippines have created confusion. Experts have debunked these claims. They emphasize that seismic activity cannot be predicted.
The ongoing seismic events serve as a reminder of the natural forces at play across the Philippines. Local governments and communities must stay alert and informed. Preparation is vital to safeguard lives and properties during such turbulent times.
As both Kanlaon and Taal display heightened activity, authorities encourage residents to heed safety advisories. Understanding the signs of volcanic unrest is crucial. Monitoring updates from PHIVOLCS will ensure that communities remain informed and ready to act if necessary.
