Dear Readers,

I write to you today not only as a creator of content but as someone who is deeply concerned about the rapidly changing role of artificial intelligence in our society. I find myself in a uniquely challenging position: I have scheduled 793 posts, each thoughtfully illustrated using AI-generated graphic illustrations. This journey has been immensely creative and fulfilling; however, the ongoing debates surrounding AI and its influence on art have left me reflective and, at times, apologetic.

First and foremost, I want to express my understanding and agreement with the concerns many have regarding AI’s relationship with existing artwork. The practice of using existing artistic pieces to generate new content is indeed a significant oversight that does not align with ethical standards. At some point, we must have anticipated that our technology should learn to create independently, without relying on the work of others. This approach raises valid questions about originality and creativity, which deserve a thorough examination.

When it comes to written content, we encounter a different dilemma. Many people believe that by citing their sources, they can navigate the complicated waters of originality versus plagiarism. While there is a genuine case for the concept of common knowledge, it often remains underappreciated by academics and legal professionals alike. Common knowledge allows individuals to use phrases or ideas that resonate, even if they cannot pinpoint their origin, as long as they acknowledge they are not their own. In this realm, AI can be viewed as a helpful ally, enabling us to synthesize information while maintaining academic integrity.

Yet, I know that perceptions of AI and its potential threats resonate strongly with many. For those who fear AI as an adversary, I respectfully assert: in my experience, it is not a threat but rather a tool that can empower creativity and innovation. I have managed to harness its capabilities effectively, drawing new insights and inspiration along the way. I want to emphasize that my conclusions regarding AI’s role in my work are entirely my own; they do not stem from external influences but rather from personal reflection and experience.

I understand that my reliance on AI-generated illustrations may upset some of my peers and readers, especially against the backdrop of evolving discussions about artistic integrity. I apologize for any discomfort this may cause. My intention was never to undermine the value of traditional artistry, but to explore how technology can coexist with creativity.

As we find ourselves confronting these issues, I hope to encourage a dialogue about innovation and ethics in our craft. It is essential to openly explore these topics, acknowledging differing opinions. After all, it is through conversation and understanding that we can address this new terrain with thoughtfulness and respect.

Thank you for considering my reflections on this complex topic. I appreciate your understanding and look forward to continuing this conversation about the intersection of art and technology.

Warm regards,
Cliff Potts
