Sam Kieth, an American comic book artist and writer known for his distinctive, surreal style, died March 15, 2026, at the age of 63.
Kieth was best known as the creator of The Maxx, a 1990s independent comic that blended psychological themes with unconventional storytelling and later became an MTV animated series. He also contributed early artwork to The Sandman alongside writer Neil Gaiman and worked on major titles including Batman, The Incredible Hulk, and Wolverine.
His work was widely recognized for its emotional depth, distorted figures, and departure from traditional comic book aesthetics, influencing a generation of artists in the medium.
Kieth had reportedly been living with Lewy body dementia prior to his death.
