The West Philippine Sea (WPS), a critical maritime region within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, remains a flashpoint for geopolitical tensions, particularly between the Philippines and China. Over the past few days, from July 3–5, 2025, several developments highlight the ongoing disputes and international responses. A notable event was China’s attempt to block the screening of the Filipino documentary Food Delivery: Fresh from the West Philippine Sea at New Zealand’s Doc Edge Festival. The documentary, which won the Tides of Change Award, showcases the struggles of Filipino fishermen and coast guard personnel amid China’s aggressive actions in the WPS (Philstar.com, 2025; Tribune.net.ph, 2025). China’s consulate labeled the film as “disinformation,” prompting condemnation from maritime experts like Ray Powell, who criticized China’s efforts to suppress transparency (Philstar.com, 2025).

Concurrently, Tropical Storm Danas (Bising) traversed the northern WPS, located 460 km west of Basco, Batanes, on July 5, 2025, potentially disrupting maritime activities (Inquirer.net, 2025). While no direct confrontations between Philippine and Chinese vessels were reported during this period, the U.S. Navy’s USS George Washington conducted patrols on July 2, signaling continued American support against China’s maritime assertiveness (Philstar.com, 2025). The Philippines’ transparency policy, championed by President Marcos Jr., has bolstered public support, with 84% of Filipinos backing the defense of WPS sovereignty (PIA, 2025).

These events underscore the multifaceted challenges in the WPS, from cultural censorship to environmental disruptions and military posturing. The Philippines continues to assert its rights under the 2016 arbitral ruling, while international allies amplify pressure on China to adhere to international law.
