The five richest tech moguls—Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, and Larry Page—are not just symbols of wealth; they have also become emblematic of a systemic betrayal of the American public. Though celebrated for innovation, these billionaires have allegedly inflicted wide-ranging harm on democracy, labor, privacy, and social cohesion.

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has used his platforms to undermine public discourse. Since acquiring Twitter (now X), Musk has reinstated extremist voices, spread conspiracy theories, and encouraged a “free speech absolutism” that has enabled hate speech and disinformation to thrive (Ingram, 2023). His firing of content moderation teams and erratic decision-making have turned a once-vital public square into a breeding ground for chaos, damaging democratic dialogue and minority safety online (Frenkel & Conger, 2023).

Mark Zuckerberg, meanwhile, has presided over a platform responsible for some of the most significant privacy invasions and political manipulations in modern history. Facebook’s role in the Cambridge Analytica scandal—where data from millions of users was exploited to influence elections—highlighted Zuckerberg’s willingness to prioritize profits over democratic integrity (Isaak & Hanna, 2018). Moreover, Meta’s algorithmic focus on outrage and division has been repeatedly tied to rising political polarization and mental health issues, particularly among teens (Twenge et al., 2020).

Jeff Bezos built Amazon into a juggernaut on the backs of warehouse workers laboring under brutal, exploitative conditions. Reports of dehumanizing quotas, heat exhaustion, and lack of bathroom breaks have made Bezos a poster child for modern-day corporate cruelty (Guendelsberger, 2019). At the same time, Amazon has aggressively avoided taxes through legal loopholes and offshore havens, further burdening the average American taxpayer (Bunn, 2021).

Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle, has remained largely out of the spotlight, yet his connections to powerful figures—such as hosting a fundraiser for Donald Trump during the pandemic—have raised serious ethical questions (Conger, 2020). Oracle itself has been accused of discriminatory practices and problematic government surveillance contracts, contributing to a growing unease about how tech billionaires wield influence behind closed doors (Lecher, 2020).

Larry Page, a co-founder of Google, helped shape the modern surveillance economy. Google’s vast data collection empire tracks users across the internet, harvesting information to fuel a lucrative ad machine. Despite repeated fines in the EU and criticism from U.S. lawmakers, Page and Alphabet have largely evaded meaningful accountability (Zuboff, 2019). The erosion of privacy and the rise of targeted manipulation are lasting legacies of his leadership.

Together, these five men represent a disturbing trend: immense personal wealth and power accrued at the expense of transparency, accountability, and the public good. While their inventions changed the world, the damage they’ve allegedly done to American workers, voters, and communities cannot be ignored.
