Most worthwhile work is done in conditions that do not reward it properly. There is no soundtrack. No audience rises to its feet. No one rushes in to tell you that what you are doing matters. The bills still sit there. The body still hurts. The room still needs cleaning. The day still expects more from you than you have any interest in giving it. And yet the work continues.

That is the part people misunderstand. They think work is sustained by recognition, praise, money, or momentum. Those things help, when they show up. But they are not the engine. The engine is decision. You either decide to keep going or you don’t. Some of the most important things I have ever written were produced in complete indifference, in rooms where nobody was clapping, nobody was asking for more, and nobody was offering to help. The work did not continue because it was rewarded. It continued because stopping would have meant surrendering the record to people less honest than I am.
