The Eastern Orthodox tradition emphasizes the sacredness of life and the virtues of humility and meekness. However, it also recognizes the need for self-defense, particularly when faced with night attacks that threaten one’s family and community. Drawing on the teachings of the Church Fathers, we are reminded that it is acceptable to respond with force to protect the innocent against aggressors. St. John Chrysostom stated, “He who does not oppose the devil is also guilty.” At night, when the darkness may symbolize moral confusion, Christians are called to awaken to the responsibility of defending themselves and their families. Importantly, this is done with a desire not just for survival but for restoration and justice, emphasizing that each act of self-defense must be balanced with love for even the aggressor. Through faith and prayer, we equip ourselves with the strength to stand against evil, wielding self-defense as both a duty and a ministry.
