Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines | November 21, 2024 — In a recent display of what appears to be historical revisionism, China has accused the Philippines of acting aggressively in the disputed waters of the West Philippine Sea (WPS). This accusation comes despite overwhelming evidence, including videos released by China itself, clearly demonstrating the opposite.

The Philippines has consistently maintained a policy of restraint and diplomacy in the face of Chinese incursions. This commitment to peaceful resolution stands in stark contrast to China’s actions. Documented instances of Chinese vessels harassing and blocking Philippine fishermen and coast guard patrols paint a clear picture of who the true aggressor is.

Furthermore, China’s convenient dismissal of the 2016 international arbitration ruling on the WPS is deeply concerning. This landmark decision, handed down by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, decisively rejected China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea. By ignoring this legally binding ruling, China undermines the very foundation of international law and order.

The international community must take a firm stance against China’s attempts to rewrite history and bully its neighbors. The documented evidence of Chinese aggression speaks for itself.

The Philippines deserves the unwavering support of its allies in upholding the 2016 arbitration ruling and ensuring freedom of navigation in the WPS. A rules-based international order, where disputes are settled peacefully and the rights of sovereign nations are respected, is in the best interests of all.

China’s accusations ring hollow in the face of documented facts. It’s time for them to demonstrate a genuine commitment to peaceful resolution and respect for international law.
