A reply to We Are on Our Own by Marc Elias December 22, 2024
Hello Marc;
The concerns outlined in your essay highlight the urgent challenges we face, yet it is also important to remember and emphasize the resiliency inherent within our system and its people.
While the journey may seem daunting, history has shown us that collective action and an unwavering commitment to democratic principles can lead to meaningful progress. The “we” you speak of is indeed vast and diverse, encompassing individuals from all walks of life united by a common goal: preserving democracy and justice for all.
Rather than focusing solely on the struggles, we can also shine a light on the potential for change and the power we hold in our hands. By engaging in open dialogue and encouraging community involvement, we can mobilize a movement built on unity and shared purpose. This is a time to fortify our institutions with active participation, turning “being on our own” into an empowering call to action, reminding us that change begins with us—not as isolated individuals, but as an interconnected society.
Furthermore, innovation and activism continue to blossom through technology and grassroots efforts. From harnessing social media to engage and inform, to supporting organizations that champion integrity and accountability, there is a wealth of avenues available to counter the challenges described.
As daunting as the path may seem, it is within these momentous times that unity can flourish. By fostering solidarity and maintaining determined optimism, we can ensure the preservation of democracy and inspire future generations to uphold these ideals. Together, we transform “we are on our own” into “we are united and empowered” – ready to face and overcome obstacles on this journey toward a brighter future.
I suggest reading Studs Terkel’s Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression. It provides a compelling reminder that we have faced similar challenges before—and overcome them—more than once.
