Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook has become a fertile ground for white supremacist groups, extremist militias, and hateful ideologies to flourish with minimal consequence. Despite repeated public promises to curb hate speech and extremist organizing, internal documents leaked by whistleblower Frances Haugen and investigative journalism reveal a platform that prioritizes profits over safety, allowing dangerous content to spread unchecked (Facebook Papers, 2021).

The Facebook Papers, a trove of internal communications, exposed that the company’s algorithms intentionally amplify divisive and extremist content because it drives user engagement—and advertising revenue. This means posts promoting hate, violence, and conspiracy theories often reach vast audiences, fueling polarization and real-world harm (Facebook Papers, 2021; Isaac & Frenkel, 2020).

Compounding the issue is Facebook’s inconsistent enforcement of its own policies. While some pages promoting hate are removed, many white supremacist groups and militia organizations operate openly. Reports from watchdogs like the Anti-Defamation League show how Facebook has allowed these groups to recruit, organize rallies, and spread propaganda with little pushback (Anti-Defamation League, 2022).

The problem extends beyond groups to personal threats and targeted harassment. Victims of extremist violence frequently report that Facebook fails to respond adequately to direct threats or abusive behavior. Whistleblower testimony underscores how the company’s enforcement teams are overwhelmed, under-resourced, and often reluctant to act against high-engagement content that violates policies (Haugen, 2021).

Facebook’s political advertising policies also exacerbate the crisis. False and misleading ads promoting authoritarian agendas flood the platform, especially during elections, while progressive voices are disproportionately censored or demonetized. This double standard entrenches far-right influence and stifles dissenting perspectives (Isaac & Frenkel, 2020).

The consequences are severe. Facebook’s complicity has helped radicalize individuals, facilitate violence, and degrade democratic norms. The January 6 Capitol insurrection and countless violent acts worldwide have roots traceable to the unchecked spread of extremist content on Facebook (Anti-Defamation League, 2022).

In the face of these failures, Zuckerberg’s leadership remains disturbingly silent or evasive. The platform’s algorithms and policies continue to prioritize growth and engagement over the safety and dignity of its users.

The fight against digital fascism demands relentless pressure on Facebook to enforce policies rigorously, increase transparency, and put human rights above profits. It also requires grassroots resistance: reporting hate, supporting victims, and building alternative digital spaces grounded in accountability.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook is not a neutral platform but a digital haven for hate. It’s time to hold it accountable before the damage becomes irreversible.

Since it is obvious that the USA will do nothing about this situation, maybe the EU will?
