There was a time when almost every American neighborhood had a newspaper route. Each morning, a paper landed on the porch, and most people thought nothing of paying for it. News was understood to have value because someone had to gather it, verify it, write it, edit it, print it, and deliver it.
In the mid-1970s, a daily newspaper commonly sold for ten cents. Adjusted for inflation, that works out to roughly sixty cents today. Yet a single print edition of many major newspapers now sells for around two dollars at the newsstand. The economics of journalism have changed dramatically, but one thing has not: producing reliable information still requires time, effort, and resources (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, n.d.).
Somewhere along the way, however, many readers came to expect news to be free.
The internet has made access to information easier than at any point in human history. It has also created the illusion that the work behind that information costs nothing. Every article represents hours of research, writing, editing, website maintenance, software expenses, and the ongoing effort required to preserve years of archives for future readers.
Independent journalism does not enjoy the advantages of billion-dollar corporations. There is no large advertising department. There are no corporate owners spreading costs across hundreds of publications. Independent publishers either receive support from readers or absorb the expense themselves.
That is the reality behind WPS News.
Every article published here is researched, written, edited, and archived with the goal of creating a lasting record. Some stories examine current events. Others explore history, politics, science, technology, or international affairs. Together they form an expanding library intended not only for today’s readers but for those who may search for these subjects years from now.
When readers support independent journalism, they are not simply paying for today’s article. They are helping preserve thousands of pages of work already completed while making tomorrow’s reporting possible.
Our monthly supporter level is five dollars.
That amounts to less than the inflation-adjusted cost of purchasing a newspaper every day for a single week. In return, supporters help sustain years of archived reporting while encouraging the continued publication of new material on a regular schedule.
Whether you choose to become a supporter is, of course, entirely your decision.
What I ask is something much simpler: consider what reliable, independent journalism is actually worth.
For generations, people accepted that good reporting deserved to be paid for. The method has changed from paper routes and newsstands to websites and digital archives, but the principle remains exactly the same.
If independent journalism has value, then preserving it has value as well.
