U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, the longtime Republican senator from South Carolina, died Saturday evening, July 11, at the age of 71 following what his office described as a brief and sudden illness. The announcement circulating on Facebook is legitimate and has been confirmed by Graham’s office, the Associated Press, Reuters, CBS News, and other major news organizations; it is not an internet death hoax. Graham served in the Senate beginning in 2003 and became one of Donald Trump’s most dependable congressional allies after initially opposing him during the 2016 presidential campaign. No official cause of death beyond the description of a sudden illness has yet been released. Death notices involving the aging generation that has dominated American politics for decades will inevitably become more frequent—and at 68, this editor recognizes that none of us is guaranteed nearly as much time as we sometimes assume.
