Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines — July 20, 2026

China has been unusually clear about the broad direction of its space program. On the Moon, it says it intends to land astronauts before 2030, expand robotic exploration at the lunar south pole, and help build an International Lunar Research Station in the 2030s. On Mars, it says it plans to attempt a sample-return mission around 2028, with a return to Earth around 2031. On deeper-space exploration, it has also laid out asteroid and Jupiter-system missions as part of a longer planetary program. Whatever one thinks of China politically, that is a serious exploration agenda by any standard.

The lunar side of the program is the clearest place to start. China’s government and state space agencies have repeatedly said they are targeting a crewed lunar landing before 2030. The mission architecture they have described is straightforward: two launches, one carrying a crewed spacecraft and one carrying a lunar lander, followed by rendezvous and docking in lunar orbit, descent to the surface, surface operations, and return. Chinese official reporting has said the mission is intended for scientific exploration, not simply symbolic prestige.

China has also put more detail behind that goal than many casual observers realize. Official Chinese reporting has named major elements of the crewed lunar stack already in development: the Long March-10 rocket, the Mengzhou crewed spacecraft, the Lanyue lunar lander, the Wangyu moon-landing spacesuit, and the Tansuo crewed lunar rover. Chinese officials have also said construction of related launch and test facilities is moving ahead at Wenchang. That does not guarantee success on schedule, but it does mean the program is operating as an engineering effort, not just a slogan.

Before that crewed landing attempt, China is still using robotic lunar missions to prepare the ground. The Chang’e-7 mission, officially described as a lunar south pole mission, has been scheduled around 2026 and is expected to look for water ice and test technologies relevant to sustainable activity in that region. Chinese official reporting says Chang’e-8, planned around 2028, is intended to test in-situ resource utilization and, together with Chang’e-7, help form the basic model of a lunar research station.

That lunar research station matters because it shows China is not describing the Moon as a one-shot destination. China and its partners describe the International Lunar Research Station, or ILRS, as a long-term scientific facility involving both lunar-surface and lunar-orbit components. Official Chinese reporting says the basic model is to be built by 2035 in the lunar south pole region, with later expansion beyond that. Chinese officials have also framed the project as international, saying multiple countries and institutions have signed cooperation documents or joined related work.

China’s recent robotic record gives that long-term plan more weight. In 2024, Chang’e-6 returned lunar samples from the Moon’s far side, the first mission ever to do so. Chinese official reporting tied that success directly to future south-pole missions and to the development path leading toward Chang’e-7, Chang’e-8, and the ILRS. The relay satellite Queqiao-2 was also described by China as an important communications step for those future missions. In plain terms, China is building out its lunar program in layers: relay capability, sample return, south-pole prospecting, resource-use testing, then a broader station architecture.

Mars is the second major track. China’s Tianwen-1 mission already placed an orbiter at Mars and delivered the Zhurong rover to the Martian surface, which gave Beijing credibility when it started talking about more ambitious follow-ons. China has since said Tianwen-3 is its planned Mars sample-return mission. Chinese official reporting in 2024 described Tianwen-3 as planned around 2030, but later official reporting in 2025 said the target had moved earlier, to around 2028, with a goal of bringing back at least 500 grams of Martian material by around 2031.

If Tianwen-3 flies on that schedule, it would be a very ambitious mission. Chinese official reporting says it would involve two launches, a transit of seven to eight months to Mars, about a year of operations there, and a full round-trip duration of more than three years. The stated science goals are also substantial: searching for possible signs of past life, studying Mars’ habitability, and investigating the planet’s geological and environmental evolution. Those are not minor objectives. They place China squarely in the top tier of planetary exploration planning.

China is also not limiting itself to the Moon and Mars. The CNSA said in 2024 that Tianwen-2 was scheduled around 2025 for asteroid exploration and sample return work, while Tianwen-4 was planned around 2030 to explore the Jovian system. Official Chinese reporting in 2025 also described Tianwen-2 as a rendezvous-and-sample mission to a near-Earth asteroid, followed by a flyby of a main-belt comet. That matters because it shows China’s space program is not just chasing a single prestige headline. It is trying to become a durable, multi-destination exploration power.

The fair reading of all this is not triumphalism and not dismissal. China has not yet landed astronauts on the Moon. It has not yet returned Mars samples. Timelines in space programs slip, hardware fails, and political priorities change. But China has publicly stated its objectives, attached named missions and hardware to those objectives, and backed them with recent accomplishments in lunar sample return, Mars exploration, relay infrastructure, and heavy mission planning. That deserves to be reported as it is: not as fantasy, not as propaganda, but as a real national program with visible momentum.

For readers outside China, the most important point may be the simplest one. China is not talking about space as a symbolic luxury. It is treating space as a long-range national capability. On the Moon, the stated sequence is prospect, test, land, build. On Mars, it is orbit, land, sample, return. That is a coherent exploration logic. It does not require admiration or fear to recognize it. It only requires paying attention.
